About Garry

My interest for all things aircraft and aviation began from a young age, I would go running to the window at the sound of anything flying overhead, I would watch in wonder until I could no longer see or hear it.

At this time I can remember one film that is etched in my head which has inspired me and that was and still is the 1955 classic "The Dam Busters".

The very moment I saw the Avro Lancaster in the film my interest just grew, the Lancaster left a mark with me for some reason I could not explain why I felt emotional with the sounds created by the four merlin engines.

Later in the early 1980’s I started making plastic kits of aircraft (which did include a Lancaster) Although they usually ended up with a bit too much glue applied which always managed to find its way to the glazed canopy.

It was just before I started going to Airshows in 1994, when I created my first profile (here I will call it an attempt at a Lancaster profile) which was drawn out of lots of tiny squares as a Bitmap (BMP) I still this image today. I never stopped drawing the Lancaster making multiple changes and over the several years, the profile has kept evolving.

By the late 1990’s I had become a regular visitor to Airshows, whereby having started with The Fighter Meet, which was held at North Weald and later going to the Flying Legends Airshows at Duxford. Over these many years since I have collected many hundreds of both on 35mm film and now digital photographs, with many of these featuring the Avro Lancaster.

The most incredible memory was in 2014 where I was part of an unforgettable moment and that was during the UK Tour of The Canadian Warplane Heritage Lancaster. I saw the majestic sight and evocative sound of two Lancaster's flying.

I have been a member of Lincolnshire's Lancaster Association (LLA) since 1988, where over the last thirty years or so I have collected a diverse collection of magazines which have all proved highly invaluable in assisting me in creating and learning about the history of Avro Lancaster B.1 PA474 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
